Gender diversity index launched by Bloomberg
/The inaugural 2018 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) has seen more than 100 companies from 10 sectors that are headquartered in 24 regions and countries join. The reference index measures gender equality across employee policies, gender-conscious product offerings, internal company statistics, and external community support and engagement.
The sector-neutral GEI follows the release of the 2016 Bloomberg Financial Services Gender-Equality Index. The 2018 GEI expands globally to include firm headquarters located in Belgium, Greece, Italy, Taiwan, Chile, Ireland, and Singapore for the first time. The companies in the GEI come from a variety of sectors, including consumer staples, materials and technology, financials, energy, and communications.
Chairman of Bloomberg and founding chairman of the US 30% Club, Peter Grauer, said Bloomberg commends the 104 companies that joined the 2018 GEO for their efforts to create work environments to support gender equality. Their leadership is an important example to help organisations innovate and navigate the rising demand for inclusive and diverse workplaces.
The 2018 index has shown:
- In 2016, women in GEI member firms held 26 per cent of senior leadership positions, 19 per cent of executive officer roles, and earned 46 per cent of promotions
- SIxty-seven per cent of members evaluate all advertising and marketing content for gender biases prior to publication
- This year GEI members have a 26.2 per cent representation on boards, compared to an average of 12.7 per cent in the ESG universe of coverage
- Sixty-five per cent of members are signatories to or members of organisations advocating for gender equality
- The percentage of executive level positions held by women in GEI member firms increased 33.5 per cent from fiscal year 2014 to 2016
Participating firms submitted a social survey created by Bloomberg, in partnership with third-party experts Women’s World Banking, National Women’s Law Centre, Catalyst, National Partnership for Women & Families, and Working Mother Media. The firms included on the 2018 index scored at or above the global threshold established by Bloomberg to reflect the achievement or adoption of best-in-class policies and statistics.
The GEI and the survey are voluntary and have no associated costs. The data is collected by Bloomberg for research purposes only.
