New Appointments
ASFA appoints board members
The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has appointed two new board members, Deanne Stewart as retail representative, and John McMurtrie, as service provider representative. The positions were casual vacancies. Stewart is the chief executive at First State Super, while McMurtrie is the managing director of Link Group. The incomings replace Michael Dwyer and Suzanne Holden, who are outgoing board members.
Hostplus promotes head of investment strategy
Hostplus has promoted Greg Clerk to its deputy chief investment manager role, an internal promotion. Clerk has been in the head of investment strategy role since March 2016.
Tasplan Super appoints new director
Trish Donohue, a former long-term Cbus investment executive, has been appointed to the Tasplan Super board as a non-executive director.
VicSuper appoints its first chief risk officer, executive manager of people experience
Martin Vassallo is the new chief risk officer at VicSuper, joining the industry fund from Tandem Corp. Jo McKennariey is the new executive manager of people experience, moving across from Blue Sky Alternative Investments.
Blue Sky welcomes new chair
Andrew Day is to replace John Kain as chair of Blue Sky Alternative Investments, with Kain re-elected as a director.
BlackRock appoints new Asia Pacific head
Geraldine Buckingham is moving on to another role as APAC head and chair, replacing Ryan Stork, who is moving on to be the company’s deputy global chief operating officer.

Paul Costello passes away
Paul Costello, an Australian financial services community stalwart, passed away on Guy Fawkes Day after a long illness. Costello has a long, distinguished career, after being the chief executive of the Superannuation Trust of Australia, a founding managing director and CEO of two sovereign wealth funds (the Future Fund and the New Zealand Superannuation Fund), and the first chair of QIC’s Global Infrastructure Investment Committee, among many other official and unofficial advisory and committee roles.
