New Appointments

QSuper/Sunsuper merger executive team announced

The new entity that will be created from the merger of QSuper and Sunsuper will be lead by:

  • Chief member officer – Karin Muller

  • Chief growth officer – Dave Woodall

  • Chief investment officer – Ian Patrick

  • Chief risk officer – Anne Browne

  • Chief technology officer – Rod Greenaway

  • Chief strategy officer – Teifi Whatley

  • General counsel – Deanne Wilden

  • Chief of QInsure – Phil Fraser

  • Deputy chief investment officer – Charles Woodhouse

  • Chief of staff – Lachlan East

Two remaining executive positions remain unfilled, the roles of chief financial officer and chief people officer.

IIG loses head of capital raising and investor relations

Amanda Goodman, head of capital raising and investor relations, has left Impact Investing Group (IIG). Goodman is going to explore her options in the sustainable investing arena.

Citi promotes head of capital markets

Citi has promoted the current head of capital markets origination for Citi Australia and New Zealand, John McLean, to managing director and head of global asset managers for Asia Pacific.

Additionally, Hayley McGuiness is a newly appointed ESG researcher added to the equities research team. McGuiness moves from Ernst & Young as a senior sustainability consultant.

FSC and AFCA appoint life code compliance committee chair

The Financial Services Council (FSC) and the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) have appointed Jan McClelland as chair of the Life Code Compliance Committee (LCCC). McClelland is the current deputy chancellor of the University of New England, chair of the Gateway Network Governance Body, and a member of the advisory board of the NSW Circular Economy Innovation Network, amongst other committees and board.

AFCA appoints lead ombudsman, insurance, small business

Emma Curtis is the new lead ombudsman of insurance at the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). Curtis joins AFCA from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in early August. Curtis replaces John Price who is retiring from his full-time role into a part-time role.

Suanne Russell is the new lead ombudsman for small business, moving into the role from Westpac.

Rest welcomes new CFO

Kulwant Singh-Pangly is the new chief financial officer at Rest industry superannuation. Singh-Pangly moves into the new role from consultancy positions.

KPMG appoints new National Executive Committee

Andrew Yates, the new chief executive at KPMG, has announced a new National Executive Committee (NEC) to lead the business from 1 July 2021. The committee achieves gender equality for the first time with six men and six women. The three new additions include:

  • Dorothy Hisgrove joins as national managing partner of people and inclusion, from PwC Australia

  • Head of external audit Eileen Hoggett has been promoted to national managing parter of audit, assurance and risk consulting

  • Consulting partner Karen Parkes is in the newly-created role of national managing partner, firm transformation

BlackRock joins institutional and retail distribution teams

BlackRock is joining the institutional and retail distribution businesses, with a reshuffle of leads. Changes include:

  • Jason Collins - head of client business

  • New team support Paula Gigler, James Stewart, Dan Annan, Stuart Anderson, Dylan Wedande and Jackson Lee

IFM Investors welcomes new board member

Theresa Whitmarsh is the latest independent director on the board of IFM Investors. Whitmarsh is the executive director of the Washington State Investment Board.

IOOF appoints chief asset management officer

Garry Mulcahy is the chief asset management officer at IOOF after the acquisition of MLC. Mulcahy was the group executive of MLC Asset Management.

UniSuper welcomes new CEO

Peter Chun is the new CEO at UniSuper from September, replacing Kevin O’Sullivan who resigned in February. Chun moves into the role from Aware Super.

Future Fund appoints board member

Patricia Cross has been appointed by the Morrison Government to the Future Fund Board of Governors on a five-year term. Michael Wachtel has had his term on the board extended for four more years.

LGIAsuper CEO position filled, leadership team announced

Kate Farrar is to head the superannuation fund created by the merger between LGIAsuper and Energy Super in July 2021. Farrar has been CEO at LGIAsuper since 2018. The leadership team includes:

  • Shawn Chan, chief risk officer

  • Garnett Hollier, chief financial officer

  • Lisa Kay, chief experience officer

  • Sean Marteene, chief transformation officer

  • Hamish McKellar, general counsel and company secretary

  • Ivan Ortiz, chief technology officer

JANA welcomes head of sustainability

Rachel Halpern is the new head of sustainability at JANA, moving into the role from Westpac.

Departures

WTW director of investment research for private markets departs

Lidia Medojevic has left Willis Towers Watson in her role as director of investment research for private markets.

AMP executive retiring

Debbie Alliston is retiring in 2021, leaving AMP and AMP Capital after over a decade of service. Alliston has held a variety of roles, including chief investment officer for AMP Capital’s multi-asset group. Anna Shelley is Alliston’s replacement.

Praemium CEO departs

Michael Ohanessian has left Praemium as chief executive after over a decade. Anthony Wamsteker is the interim CEO, joining the Praemium board in late 2020 after Praemium acquired Powerwrap.

UBS farewells head of asset manager for Australia and NZ

Bryce Doherty, head of asset management for Australia and New Zealand, is leaving UBS later this year. Head of Australian real estate John Mowat is to be the interim head of asset management until a permanent replacement is found.

ASX deputy CEO resigns

The ASX is losing its deputy chief after Peter Hiom resigned after more than 23 years. Hiom is leaving to pursue his interest in blockchain technology, joining Motive Partners.

Awards

AIST Trustee of the Year 2020

David Smith, a long-serving profit-to-member superannuation industry director and the former national secretary of the Australian Services Union, has been awarded the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) Trustee of the Year Award for 2020. Smith died in November 2019.
